"Twitter Frightens Me"

This is my Rant. Read it or not. I put it out there. I will continue to share my POV. I can only stay in the conversation with high hopes towards societal improvement. Come The revolution comrades a day will be at hand. -db

A single person might not get you to jump off the roof. With twenty people cajoling some would take the leap, you might. I am up to here with stupidity. You want to see violence, I'll show you violence! Hmmnn, who do I hate?

We have dialogued previously. Albeit in communications of shorter length. I cede my predilection for brevity to the importance of this matter.....I am referring to the fact that The Dark Side of The Internet is engendering malevolence in people possesing substandard intellects through the use of Social Media.

The internet changed everything. How can you keep them down on the farm once they've seen the big city lights? You can't go home again! We can't unlearn what we now know.

You think people grow up and act like responsible adults? Go spend some time in an adult retirement community. I'd describe it as high school but it may be more grade schoolish!

The Subprime Meltdown and Economic Slump have NOT stopped certain nefarious individuals from conducting the financial machinations that are tormenting society. The cost of OIL is on the rise. Oil tankers filled with the juice are parked offshore waiting for prices to peak. Banks are holding real estate off the market waiting for demand to be sparked by ? I dont know what! Bankers are getting enormous undeserved bonuses. In this environment, where people have no ethical standards of behavior towards humanity is it any wonder that an abortion Doctor is assasinated and a Jewish Museum attacked. Is No One Responsible?


You know that I am a longtime fan of Crackpot & Buzzkill as well as A longtime fan of ALL the personalities of the West Coast Tech Punditry Mafia who counts among their outlets, programs such as ; Buzz Out Loud, Net@Nite, All the iterations of TWIT such as TWIM, TWIS, TWIL, & TWIP, Cranky Geeks, Tech 5, No Agenda, DSC, etc....and KenRadio of course...

I am compelled to bring to the fore a subject perhaps best addressed in a Cranky Geeks or TWIT format. I wish you'se* guys would address this issue publicly, aks* questions and encourage LEO to dialogue a bit about it as well. I single out Leo in particular as he is a voiciferous proponent of interactive programming, that is to say leveraging the (so called) wisdom of crowds through crowd sourcing applications.

Years Ago, at a US Grand Prix in Watkins Glen NY I witnessed scary crowd behavior when a crowd that had gathered on both sides of a ravine became unruly when someone started to chant, "The Other Side Sucks" then everyone began chanting "The Other Side Sucks" (no difference between sides) Within seconds all hell broke loose, women were attacked and cars were rolled and burned as the occupants scampered out to relative safety. So much for the wisdom of crowds. Having spent previous and subsequent days at the race I can tell you that there is no more reason for this incident than I have indicated here.

The Digital connectivity available today speeds up and exacerbates everything including the behavior like I found at Watkins Glen NY. At root, Simple stupidity mixed with Monsters from the id. NO CAUSE at all. What makes the lone gunman climb the water tower and shoot at the populace? Isolation sparked depravity. People alone go crazy. Being online is being alone. Any other perception is illusion. You could ask if we are alone in a phone conversation?

The Danger of Social Media
Adam hit on something with his rant about the media content being mostly commentary on the media itself. Bill O'Reilly can light a fuse and Rush Limbaugh can fan a flame that Social Media will spur on towards doom. Both the Avalanche and the Tsunami start out as small tremors that eventually add to their mass as they gain momentum.

Whatever happened to tolerance? What happened to enlightened dialogue. Im afraid to find out the percentage of Social Media dialogue that is commenting on Social Media posts. ("Did you see the new font Im using") It's a giant circle jerk, a community of mental masturbation proponents.

Is MySpace relevant for anyone legally able to purchase a bottle of wine? Im not referring to the dumbing down of our society although there is that. The thrill of Facebook fades fast for anyone capable of deep and independant thought. I re-connected with some friends from my youth but after a few months of everyone dialoging about their lives and catching up there is nothing left to say. The banter in my friends community is now less than a crawl, practically non-existent. Linked In is entirely blatent PR Poop for HR departments and job seekers vying desperately for the few jobs that exist. Twitter occasionally may have some useful information such as alerts as to when No Agenda is starting but this type of messaging can be duplicated via Friendfeed, RSS or even simple posting to a webpage. Twitter is simple promotional poop and self flagellation for retards. Im particularly enamored with applications such as seesmic which lets you access your Twitter and Facebook feeds simultaneously through a single GUI.

The problem with Social Media is that it is isolating us from, positive in person human interaction and something is being lost. Social Media is not simply empowering the stupid but actually fomenting evil. The crazies on the fringes. The weak minded. Im not talking about benign special interest groups like movie afficiannados, but Racists, Skinheads and Abortion foes. I've been reviewing some hate blogs and Im telling you it's scary how these people rile each other up and believe me there is reinforcement for their delusions everywhere. Killing journalism is one thing, Killing people is another. Not that Im totally against it mind you. It's just that I like a little due process to go along with my genocide.

Fox News' Shepard Smith's pretty well known -- and oft praised -- for the way he can size up a news event and expose his own authentic concern without seeming mawkish or phony. And in the wake of today's shooting at the Holocaust Museum, Smith went on the air today to talk about the emails he's been receiving for "the past few months," and how they've been getting "more and more frightening."

SMITH: There are people now, who are way out there on a limb. And I think they're just out there on a limb with the email they send us. Because I read it, and they are out there. I mean, out there in a scary place...I could read a hundred of them like this...I mean from today. People who are so amped up and so angry for reasons that are absolutely wrong, ridiculous, preposterous."

He went on to read an email, filled with the usual paranoid "birther" nonsense, which included an admonishment to Smith. "This is, I promise, a representative sample of the kind of things that we get here," Smith said.

Time will tell if Smith's colleagues at Fox stop taking these sorts of emails casually.Smith clearly could do that no longer. I think that's appropriate!
