"Speaking Mandarin"

Sunday March Ninth 2008 by Dan Beyer

Bye Bye Miss American Pie

Even as French and British Bank failures make headlines, Congress cross examines the chiefs of Americas biggest banking institutions and New York State investigates subprime fraud.
If it looks like a duck. At this moment Financial Institutions around the globe leverage the current economic crisis by using the current crop of depressing media reports as good cover under which to dump their bad paper and get Governments, that is to say the citizenry, to underwrite the cost of their institutional excesses via public bailouts, they also have developed a severe mistrust of their fellow Financiers. In the final analysis trust is what makes the economic world go round. Apparently the banker’s are judging their contemporaries by their own personal greed quotient. Is it any wonder that there is a crisis of confidence stifling professional investment? Bernanke can lower the prime rate all he wants to but if these guys are trust challenged nobody is gonna get funded and no instruments are going to get packaged into Hedge Fund Investment vehicles and thus the flow of the world’s economic life blood slows to a trickle. Money has been removed from the system and the time has come to put it back. Where’s the surprise. The sub-prime dilemma is simply a great catalyst for what we are going through now, it’s not the entire raison d’etre .

Say Goodbye to Hollywood
Make no mistake we are living through a Seismic Shift in global economic authority. Russia, China and certain Mideast governments are now funding the world’s economy. The USA is able to prosecute our military initiative in Iraq without raising taxes because the Chinese are loaning us the $25Billion monthly that it costs us. Moscow is home to more billionaires than any other city on the planet. Astoundingly the Pentagon has chosen this time to send 60% of a twenty year $100Billion contract for refueling planes abroad to Airbus industries. Successfully stunting the growth and perhaps even killing the domestic Aeronautical Engineering Industry. Without Boeing continuing and growing how many will go to college for degrees in that kind of business?

Welcome to the USA, the world’s 33rd greatest standard of living where 1% of us live in prison. Home to the planets biggest mercenary armies of insurance salesman and freelance soldiers of fortune.

Bush and Cheney took over when Gas was $1.42 per gallon and they got what they were after at the expense of the rest of us. You don’t know what you’ve got ‘till it’s gone. Things will not return during my lifetime or yours, if ever. Get used to it and do the best you can. There was a moment when more people owned their own homes than ever before. Say goodbye to that beneficent metric. Whoever thought that the Russians would make better capitalists than us? As the Chinese increase their Military budgets and host the next Olympics I am reminded that I thought it likely China would take over as planetary leader, I just didn’t think it would happen in my lifetime.
